Our beloved Mavey passed away at 3:00pm on Sept 19th. He died of complications from diabetes. Our family loved him very much and we will always miss him.

Car Hacking

I installed a navigation hack on the 300 that enables all the Navigation menus while the car is in motion. Because everyone is sue happy, the manufacturers don't want you to be able to use all the stuff while your driving. What this hack does is make everything available while the car is in motion. That way the wife can key in new entries or look for a restaurant while were on the hiway.
I also got the iPod integration module installed. Took about 45 minutes. Now the iPod will play through the car stereo and is also controlled through the radio. pretty kewl. It does have an issue in that it erases all the presets that you have for the satellite radio. That's because the system spoofs the radio into thinking the iPod is really just another satellite. It's kinda dumb considering this is a factory unit. Oh well, just like everything else, the new MyGig units that will be out next year (08) solves all these problems..

Day 5 - The best day so far!!

Wow! What a wonderful day. We started off with our drive back to the wharf to park the car. Then we hopped the ferry out to Alcatraz. We took a walking audio tour. Basically they give you a little mp3 player with headphones that walks you through the prison and tells you little stories and gives you the history of the prison. I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed it. I was able to get a ton of pictures, and because I split up from the rest of the group and lost my way, I was able to see more of the rock than the others.
After we left there, we got an all day pass for the transit system including the cable cars. So we hopped a cable car to downtown. On our way, we jumped off at the cable car museum. I finally got to see how the whole thing works. Really simple but yet very amazing. They pull as many as 20 cable cars with 2 510hp electric motors. Back in the day, they used steam. I don't think the girls enjoyed that part as much as me and Matt.
We hopped back on the cable car and headed road it to the end of the line which is downtown next to a huge shopping mall. The girls were in heaven. We grabbed dinner at a restaurant at the top of a Nordstrom's. We had a beautiful view up Powell street from the 6th floor. After dinner, we hopped the 'MUNI' which is one of the subways here and road it about 12 blocks to within walking distance of a comedy club that we were going to. The 'Punch Line' is in the middle of the financial district and it was a wonderful night time walk to get there. The weather was perfect all day and all evening. We all had a blast at the comedy club although I think a few of the jokes made Katie uncomfortable to hear with her parents sitting with her. But that made it even more funny for me. After the club, we hopped two more cable cars back to the car. Because the car was parked next to Ghirardelli we couldn't possibly have walked by it and not stopped for a hot fudge sundae. What a perfect way to top off a wonderful day.

Day 4 - Tourist Shopping!!!!!

Day 4 started out a little rocky. We got a late start because Katie wanted to shop, then she didn't, then she did, then she didn't..... Oh well, we finally made it through that episode and headed out to 'The Great Mall' in San Jose for nothing more than shopping.... It turned out to provide a little entertainment. We were in one of the stores and got to see a couple latino chicks in a 'cat fight' shouting match.. now that was some good family entertainment.
After buying a few things and walking for a couple hours, we hopped back in the car and drove to the Golden Gate Bridge. We stopped at the overlook on the north side and did some site seeing and photos. Then we drove up to the top of the hill where all the famous pictures looking down over the bridge are taken. That gave us a chance to take a little hike so we didn't feel like the entire day was spent in the car. There is an old unfinished gun battery at the top of the hill that overlooks the entrance to the bay. It was built during WW2 but not finished because the US military determined there was no chance the enemy would be able to attack our home land. The guns they were going to put in were 16" and had a 25 mile range. They have 2 partially finished tunnels in the hillside that were to house the guns. This is a must see.
After we left there, we headed back to the hotel. They have a $5 toll to get back into the city but we didn't have to pay because we were a 'car pool'. It sounds like a deal, but it would have been cheaper to pay the $5 for just me and not have to pay to feed all the passengers. Oh well, I brought them, I guess I should feel obligated to feed them.. :)
On a side note - we all got to see our first real life transvestite! Walked right in front of us on the street. I thought is was just some lady of the night (wore out and ragged). Then he/she/it started to take off it's wig and Kate yelled.. ' It's a man!'. What a trip.. That thing went from blonde to brunette right in front of us.
Because of the late start, we decided to head back to the hotel then grab a movie at a local theater. We saw a typical 'chick flick' - Failure to Launch. The girls are so in love with that dude that stars in the movie. (name not worth mentioning) By the time we got back to the hotel from the movie, it was lights out for us old peeps while the youngin's stayed up and talked for a bit..
Were at the middle of our stay so we only have 3 days of fun left.

Day 3 - Finally had some sunshine!

We started out the day with beautiful sunshine as we headed south to Monterey Bay. It's about an hour drive from our hotel in Newark which is just south of Oakland and North of San Jose (find it with google maps). I took 118 pictures, the most so far but blogger is having problems this morning and I was only able to upload a couple.
We spent most of the morning in Monterey Bay Aquarium looking at the fishes and the sea otters. Those little guys are a hoot to watch. I got some video with the camera. I'll try to email them to Charlie so he can post it on his website.
After looking at all the fishes we grabbed a quick lunch at 'Bubba Gumps Shrimp Co." All we ate was fish and chips but we loved the restaurant. As you can imagine, it was focused around the 'Forrest Gump' movie. We bought a few souvenirs and headed out to the 17 mile scenic drive.
The drive is absolutely beautiful and takes you along the coast through Pebble Beach. They provide you with a map of all the points of interest and explain the significance of the spot. It's a must do if you ever visit the area.
We ended the scenic drive at the lodged at Pebble Beach. I'm always amazed at how much money so little people have. Did that make sense? Oh well.. After we finished the scenic drive, we went to Carmel. It's a quaint little tourist trap that is full of shopping. We got there late and the shops were about to close (thank god). I thought the girls were going to bankrupt me buying purses. When I finally was able to drag them out of there, we walked a few blocks to an Italian restaurant that one of the locals recommended. The food was good but not great.. I'm not a big fan of Italian.
Then we got back in the caddy and headed back to the hotel. Today was a day filled with wonder and beauty. Not a whole lot to say, but a day full of memories.

Day #2!! We ate to much!!

Day two started out with a nice little discussion in the car about how bad we really wanted to go to the Winchester House. Liz and I have been there before and I didn't really want to go back. I almost had everyone convinced it was too far away when Liz broke out the map and showed everyone where we were, and where the house was. Needless to say, we visited the house. The kids liked it but Matt backed me up and said he wouldn't enjoy seeing it twice either. So I guess I got a little redemption.
From there, we headed up highway 101 towards Stanford University and did a drive through. It was pretty nice but I've seen better. I suppose what sets it apart is that it's "Stanford". BTW, did I mention we ate lunch at the Cheese Factory? Well, we did... and you would have thought we hadn't eaten in a week.. more on that later.
Once we got into San Francisco, we drove downtown looking for Lumbard street. If you have never driven here, let me tell you, "they got some crazy streets". Not only is it a pain to find a street going in the direction you want to go, when you do finally find one, it's a pain to find all the streets you just saw going in the other direction... Which, by the way, is usually a street heading in the 'new' direction you want to go. oh well... We did finally find Lumbard street and got to drive the 'Caddy' (rental car) down it. We also drove down a few streets that you could not see over the hood of the car when going through the intersection because they were so steep. Katie and Liz just about freaked out over that one.
After all the driving around, we parked the car at the wharf and hopped a cable car downtown. Those things are really neat and I think that turned out to be everyone's favorite part of the day. We did get a little wet but we are prepared with rain jackets and 'rain-brellas' (Katie speak). The ride alone was a blast because we had so much fun cutting up with the driver and waving at people and just making fools of ourselves..
When we got down town, Katie and Liz did a little shopping while Matt and I stood around and 'watched'. We hopped the cable car back down to the wharf and loaded up the car.
It was getting dark by now so we headed over the Golden Gate bridge (no pictures yet) to Sausalito for dinner. We ate at a wonderful restaurant called Spinachers. It's on a small pier that sticks out into the bay, has windows on three sides and has a wonder night view the San Francisco skyline. So romantic.. if your ever here, it's a must see. Oh yea.. it's this part where we decided we had way to much to eat.
We were all pretty beat by this time so we loaded up and drove the 45 minutes back to the hotel.
Another wonderful day! Hopefully the weather will be better for our trip to Monterey.

We got here yesterday afternoon only to find out all of our luggage didn't get here with us.. Liz was the only one that had her stuff. Oh well, me and Matt figured we wouldn't look to stupid wearing Liz's clothes especially in San Francisco. The airline assured us that they would deliver it to our bags to the hotel as soon as it got here (hopefully before morning). We got the rental car and headed to the Hotel. It's in town just north east of San Jose and it's pretty nice. I"ll post pictures later. It will seem out of sequence because the blog posts newest first. Anyway, we headed down to the fisherman's wharf for supper and man were we hungry. Took a few pics, saw some sites, had a sundae at that one famous place, got rained on walking back to the car..
With the 3 hour time difference and our early start from Kokomo (3:00 am), we were dog tired when we got back to the hotel. We all were asleep within minutes of getting back..
